US News and World Report released their "Best Places to Retire in the USA" list recently. US News looked at the country’s 100 large metropolitan areas and ranked them based on six categories: happiness, housing affordability, healthcare quality, retiree taxes, the local job market, and desirability. As a retiree, why does the job market matter? After reaching retirement age, many Americans choose to scale back on their working hours instead of fully retiring. So, a healthy job market means more opportunities available for the semi-retired crowd.

The heaviest weight fell on “happiness” (23.8%). Why? If you’re not happy with where you live, your health will be affected. They used statistics found in Gallup-Healthways’ 2016 Community Well-Being Rankings to determine a city’s happiness quotient. Housing affordability and quality of healthcare determined 20.9% and 19.8% of a city’s score, respectively. Taxes made up 15.2%, the job market comprised 10.4%, and desirability rounded things out at 10%. You can read about the specifics of each category, including what statistics were used for each, by visiting the US News’ methodology page here.
